Barbra Streisand has previously opened up about her decision to clone her ‘rare dog’ Samantha after she died in 2017. It’s said to cost around $50k + per pet to clone, but there is a downside.

The music star said she “couldn’t bear to lose” her dog, and therefore went down the cloning route. Despite the animals looking the same, Streisand revealed that they actually have different personalities.

Barbra Streisand cloned two genetic replica dogs

One dog wasn’t enough for the singer and actress, who used the DNA from her late dog Samantha to clone two genetic replica dogs, named Violet and Scarlett. As per The New York Times, it costs $50k + per pet to clone.

Speaking on her decision to The Times, the 81-year-old said she couldn’t bear to lose her Coton de Tulear breed when she was lying on her deathbed six years ago.

“I think any pet lover will really understand this,” she explained. “I had to continue her DNA. There were no more curly-haired Cotons like Samantha — she was very rare. In order to get another I had to clone her.”

Before Samantha’s death, DNA samples were taken from her mouth and stomach.

Although they look like Samantha, they’re not exactly the same. Barbra previously revealed how they have “different personalities” in an interview with Variety.

“I’m waiting for them to get older so I can see if they have her [Samantha’s] brown eyes and seriousness,” she said.

Barbra’s dogs are ‘living the high life’

Barbra took her beloved dog, Samantha, who she had for 14 years, on the road with her, and still does the same with her clones.

In 2019, the star took her three dogs, Miss Scarlet, Miss Violet, and Fanny — on a 10,000-mile roundtrip to watch her perform at London’s British Summer Time concert.

The dogs did come on stage with their mom, however, spent most of the time in their own VIP section, and reportedly had their own custom buggies!
